With Regard for a Katydid...



In this oppressive July heat I discovered a Katydid.
He was moving- almost as if in pain- across the hood of my car.

If it was hot enough to fry eggs there, which it was, then it was hot enough to bake a bug as well.

I exteneded a cool, pale, peachy colored finger as an escape.
He quickly accepted.

His legs were no bigger than toothpicks-
and with Green, Grabb-ity, Scratchy Feet he reached out and perched
on my digit, like a tiny queer bird.

I looked at him closely-
He was beautiful. He seemed quite content to stand on all 4's on the hand of
the mayden who rescued him.
However, I could not hold the creature indefinitely...

I looked around for a place that he could thrive and be safe.
An equally green patch of grass in the backyard seemed to match him perfectly.

I lowered him to the earth (the earth was never far away due to my lack of height:)
And as my hands touched the grass I noticed how much cooler it was- down there- away from the pavement and the hot hoods of automobiles.

While the Katydid had been stunning on the hood of my car the fact remains that he was out of place. It's true...If he had been in my Crepe Myrtle I might not have seen him, but being out of place for too long could have killed him.

I will not forget those Green, Grabb-ity, Scratchy Feet clinging to my finger.
Or how perfect it seemed to place him in the grass. I am glad I was in the right place at the right time to assist.

Though, he did make me wonder later...

Where in my life am I like the Katydid?

In what areas am I hot-footing it on the hood of a car- when I belong in the grass?

When I first read this passage out of The 4 Loves- I was stunned. I wrote it down...tried to memorize it. This past week in a panic I tried to recall it, tried to find it...thank goodness for Google! I have almost every book Mr. Lewis wrote- I'd have been looking for quite a while :)

We often hear people speak about building walls around their heart- to protect themselves...but we rarely hear the fortress being described as a casket.

It is a casket- or a tomb--those walls around the heart. And those walls are built with anger, or bitterness, greed, or indifference, and almost always fortified with pride.
But threre are stranger materials sometimes...
Anything we can surround ourselves with and hide inside of can be a casket.

Even religion, or politics, or another person.

To step out makes us vunerable.

What's worse- a broken heart, or an Unbreakable one?

Let me have This One that can be broken. It has been mended before, it will no doubt need mending again...

And as for the casket- I plan to be cremated...so I won't be needing that either.

Storge- Affection
Philia- Friendship
Eros- Sexual love
Agape- Selfless love, the love of God

These are the 4 Greek words that are translated as love in English.

It is a shame there is only one word for LOVE in English, isn't it?

Lance is more than Gay. I am more than Blonde.

If being Straight is only about sex- I may have a problem…

Over the span of a lifetime- most people will spend more time using the bathroom, including showers and brushing/flossing, than they'll spend having sex. (and if you don't floss, you really should~ :)

When my life is over I will definitely have spent more time cooking and cleaning and reading than having sex.

I spend more time in the car taking the kids to school- EVERY DAY- than having sex.

Does it matter to me that Lance is Gay? No. Does it matter to me if he is kind? Yes, sort of-

Does it matter to me that he might be “getting lucky” a little more often than me?

Well, at least that would be interesting…

;)

Sweeter stuff ...and good enough :)














Last night was better- no bad dreams. Thank you for all the kind thoughts...I don't deserve any of you! :)

I read "Now We Are Six" before going to bed-

I find so much beauty- so much that is pure and sweet in those old stories and poems.
Such drama in finding a beetle and losing him in the house! Or of finding Dragons with a best friend...or the finer points of fishing from a 6 year old perspective.

My 2nd childhood will be far more perfect than my first- for I will be well read on the matter!
With war, and loss, childbirth, and mortgages well behind me...When I turn 70- Christopher Robin and I will still be friends :)

Warning- Not a funny post~ A Nightmare...

I don't often have bad dreams.

I have an over active imagination and I avoid scary movies and books for just that reason. My dreams reflect what I feed my head.
I did see a few clips of a horror movie from 1975 on a comedy program last night- but it seemed harmless enough.

I didn't give it a second thought~

Before going to bed...still somewhat grieving over the passsing of my
Grandfather, I journaled before going to sleep. I don't (and won't) usually post too much of what I write in my journal, but today it seems apprropriate.

July 23rd, 2006
(My thoughts on/during/after the funeral)

"I felt the full weight of how temporary we all are. How things/humans come and go.
People don't last.

My Mom finally broke down when she saw her Father in the coffin.
He was cold.

All I could think was:

One day I'll be cold-
As cold as a piece of meat from the fridge.

Joints and muscles stiffened-
Never to move again.

With my sight blackened,
My ears closed,
My mouth silenced.

Heart no longer beating-
Blood flow stopped-
Lungs still.

But his soul- his Spirit- Where was it now?
Not here...not anywhere that I can see-

Finally It was time to close my eyes.
I have to sleep on my side and I use 3 pillows, 1- under my head, 1- between my knees, and 1- I call my "Huggy-pillow". The huggy pillow helps support my shoulders, but it has become something of a security item...I know that's silly, but it is what it is.
I love that pillow and I almost never travel without it.

In the middle of the night I turned over and began re-adjusting all of my pillows.
Finally, the huggy pillow, I begin to draw up to my chest and face.
To my absolute horror I saw one of the biggest, vilest, most horrible spiders I had ever seen in such close proximity.
It was cold, and dark, soul-less... and right there on my favorite pillow.

I woke up screaming. It was 4 am.
I threw the pillow across the bed. I sat up, shaking my clothes and searching the sheets- on the one hand terrified that I would find it, and equally terrified that I wouldn't!


It took several minutes for me to realize that I had been dreaming.

I got up and went to the bathroom- double checked my hair and my PJ's... and found nothing. Got a drink of water, but couldn't shake the "willies" I felt.

I never did go back to sleep...I just couldn't. Even as the morning sun poured in through my windows I kept looking.

As the day has progressed I see how the dream reflects what I had written in my journal- but I didn't see it right away. If I had been asked yesterday, "Do you fear death?" I would have said no.

But the dream tells me something else.
I do have fears...and I'm more afraid of the unknown than I'd like to admit. And I am searching too.

And by this hour of the day...I am getting mighty tired! :)
No journaling for me tonight- unless I can write about something happy and soothing~

It might just be a good evening to spend reading "Now we are 6", by AA Milne:), or some
Robert Louis Stevenson "Poetry"...

Rotty- can you come over? lol!

"Steadfast and Devoted Attachment" ~ And a Winner...




Part I~
The Cause and the Characters

The K9 was Fidelity Personified,

His allegiance was his pleasure to give.

The Detective- Beguiling and Charming,
Waxed long about being true,
About Harmony, Trust, and Alchemy,
And something about "Bondo" too~

But often he was discovered-
Chasing hoop skirts and ladies on the net...
On bended knees he proclaims adoration-
But Fidelity? Mayden is looking for it YET.

Boneman dared not try his pen,
Against 3 in a duel over One,
Yet Fidelity seemed a virtue he grasped,
If submitted- Perhaps he'd have won!

Fidelity’s Sweet Alchemy

Fidelity is harmony,
Fidelity is trust,
Fidelity’s essentially
A pleasure and a must.

An emblem of fidelity
Lee Kennedy is not;
At first he studied chemistry
But then he had this thought:

“I’ll study some psychology,
I really don’t know why;
Perhaps the girls will ogle me
If I can make them cry...”

At Deakin University
The ladies now make eyes:
Psychology has chemistry;
They heave their wanton sighs.

Lee’s wife resents it mightily,
By day she knits him sweaters,
She muses on fidelity -
Then intercepts his letters!

Enough of Lee, I turn to thee,
And on my knees implore:
For surely thou dost plainly see
Tis thee that I adore?

Why else would I make rhymes about
This “Lee” guy, anyway –
I know not where he gets such clout
Nor why of him I bray.

Simper Fidelis
An Agony in Four Fits and a Poem.

I.
Where the players are introduced to the crowd.

There was a time when there was peace throughout the land
And life was milk and honey
When all things were considered, it was rather grand
And well done eggs were runny.

A fair young Maiden entered this idyll
And hearts went all aflutter
She grabbed their attention and had a fiddle
She melted them like butter.

Like hapless candles fluttering around a moth
The Gumshoe was first to break
He threw down a glove made of the finest cloth
Which the Knight was loathe to take.

But take it he did, their relationship terse;
They waited the Maiden’s decree.
Fidelity was the given task; plus a verse
About some harmless drudge named Lee.


II.
Where the players are jostling for position.

The Gumshoe fretted while the Knight sipped his wine
But others had entered the ring
The smart money moved onto the Rottie, K9
Fidelity already his thing.

But the stumbling block that was causing most grief
Was the mandatory topic, Lee.
“To be writing about him is beyond belief”
Said the Knight. The others had to agree.

Lillie and Lux came to play. “We want to know:
Can we take Lee when it’s over?
The Maiden can go to the cop or Cosmo,
She can even run off with Rover.”

So, dear reader, the lines are drawn, words have been said;
We are slowly progressing the scenes;
Fidelity remains to be hit on the head;
Does anyone know what it means?


III.
Where the Knight writes on fidelity.

The Knight looked down at his blank serviette
And wondered what to write
Help me Sancho! There must be some angle to get
On the others in this fight.

The Gumshoe, said Sancho, will view it felonious
That’s what policemen do.
Perhaps you should heed the words of Polonius
And “To thine self be true”?

Now, the dog of course, is an outside chance
While Percy’s chasing robbers;
But really what woman gives a second glance
To a hairy beau that slobbers?

It was Percy, for Mayden, who started this fight,
A copper for a gal;
Under the circumstances, it sounds right,
If I use a villian-elle.

My Poem to Lee“Lee Kennedy”

Lee is a teacher by heart,
But Chemistry is mostly his trade,
And he covers a wide range of topics
On his blog called “The Curates Egg”.

He’s been married for 25 years,
His wife, Margaret, a fine lovely Scott-
One night, after having chopped chili’s,
Lee’s passion got a little too hot!

It's almost over...



I went to AC Moore tonight- shopping for pens and albums and a bag to carry my books in. As I was preparing to leave the store- I discoverd these figurines.

In a sudden flash of inspiration- I gathered up a few and began to pose them!

Percy continues to press for votes...and I am sure, as is the nature of humans who want a say in all things...there will indeed be votes~ To be cast at Mayden's Voyage.

As to a detractor who questioned if a maid was ever "worth it"- my reply came in the form of, you guessed it, a poem. Most of you have read it, but since it is mine I will re-post it here at MV.

4 Things

1. You can probably tell that I have been fooling around with my Template Settings...and something is askew. If you have any suggestions- please email them to me, or leave a note on my blog. Helpful suggestions only please...

2. I have updated my sidebar- and I really do enjoy these blogs- almost daily. Certainly not more than a week passes without my reading them. If I over looked you-please let me know...

3. IMPORTANT: How do you deal with a stranger attacking you? If the assault is physical, do you hit back, or run? If it's verbal- do you defend yourself, or let your personality speak for itself?
If you are a person who believes in prayer- Do you pray for your attacker?
(I do/both)
How do you deal with lies being told about yourself?
Is the love and care of your friends enough to soothe the burns inflicted by a stranger? (Yes, by all means- I hope so!)

4. I am a total flirt- but if you've spent any time here you know I am fairly deeper than that. I've covered everything from abortion to the Korean War on this blog-- I'll celebrate my 100th post in the very near future. Thank you for being here and encouraging me along the way :)

Blissfully Unique~ sort of :)

I LOVE getting those goofy address labels in the mail...
You know, the ones from the Disabled Veterans, or the American Heart Association...or St. Jude's.

If my name is spelled correctly- and the last name is tough because it's Norwegian (and IT IS a weird last name) - I almost always send money: specially to the Disabled Veterans.


I have a nice computer, with a fairly good printer...and I have a box of plain labels- I can make all the cute address stickers I want- but I never do!

Nor do I have to-

To date I have about 3,000 labels with my name and address on them! When we moved 5 years ago I hated to throw away all that stuff with the old address on it.

Alternate uses for printed address labels...

Mail some to a Grandparent or a relative you keep in touch with- specially an elderly person.
It makes sending you a card or note that much easier.

Put one on the back of a photo you are sending to someone (particularly a photo of yourself!)- be sure to put the date on the back of the photo as well.

Use the labels on dishes and utensils for ANY and every pot-luck event you take a dish to...or if you are making dinner for a friend who is sick or with a new baby.
My dishes rarely end up with someone else.

If you are moving- or about to move and want to send your address to people who actaully write to you- take a stack of Rolodex cards, affix your address label, and then mail the rolodex cards out to your friends.

Put one inside the book you loan out to a friend.

Stick one on the bottom of ANYTHING on your desk at work that tends to wander off...like staplers, and tape and scissors.

Cd's, movies, items that you want returned....

OK, you get the idea.

I hope -by some of your replies- to find out that I am not as weird as I think I am...


1.) My mind is almost never quiet-there is scarcely a time when a song is not playing in my head- right now- it's Billy Idol's "Sweet 16". Sometimes it drives me nuts.

2.) I used to HATE having my picture taken- now I don't...as long as I am the one taking it- all pics on this blog have been taken by me- and me alone :)

3.) I detest clothes shopping- but wanted to be a fashion designer when I was 10-12

4.) I have the phrase, "The Time is Write" written on my bathroom mirror in ink...

5.) I make up stories about people I am on an airplane with- I give them a name, a job, who their spouse it...a full character sketch-

6.) My middle name is spelled "Michealle"- Mom wasn't sure how to spell it- and the nurse said- spell it anyway you want to...so she did.

Independence Day

Wow!

For a girl who loves all things funny- who refuses to watch almost any movie that will make me cry- (I cry over stupid comercials on TV!)...I loved this movie.

Yes- I sobbed like a baby through parts of it- had to stop watching it half-way through because I could hardly breathe (asthma kicks up when I cry!)- but I pressed on and it was worth it.

The movie is about 5 missionaries (Nate Saint, Jim Elliot, Ed McCully, Pete Fleming, and Roger Youderian) who try to make contact with a dangerous tribe called the Waodani. They do make contact and are eventually killed- speared to death by the men of the tribe. The wives and children of the dead missionaries move in with the tribe to continue what their husbands started. The movie is told from the perspective of Steve Saint, who was a little boy when his dad, Nate, was killed.

It sounds so over the top- like the ultimate "Turn the other cheek", and it is in a way, but the famlies knew their lives were at stake the whole time they were in Ecuador. Yes, it was a radical thing for the wives to move in with the tribe, but no more radical than the Gospel they were trying to share.

What would I put my life on the line for?



This is a touching film based on a true story- It's a movie about people who risked their lives to do what they felt called to do, and we- the viewers- see how lives were changed, and in many ways bettered, by their involvement.
It is not overly religious, though you know that faith is what drives the missionaries and sustains them through some difficult and painful experiences.

The film does move slowly in some places, and we don't hear enough about the oil companies involvement in stirring up the tribes, but again, the film is told from the little boys POV- So of course the oil angle is left out.




Overall it was a great movie.

I've more than met my quota of spilled tears for the year- the next movie will have to be a side splitter!

Vote For Pedro!


2 posts in one day-
For dinner I had Sushi-and beer (what an awesome combination!) and a mixer...I shouldn't even be on line! LOL!
I'm a single parent again tonight- trying to make the best of things :)



The kids and I watched "Napolean Dynamite" for the 2nd time...I swear it gets funnier everytime I watch it :) I agree that it's kind of a stupid movie-

The movie covers a wide range of characters- some of which you have to flesh out for yourself...like the Grandma- Or Pedro's cousins...the girls are easy to identify with- or hate.

Which kind of girl do you suppse I was? Would it surprise you?

I most identify with the Grandmother- 60 something- out on a wild date with her boyfriend in the dunes- riding her motor bike! :)

I looked more like the blonde chick- felt like the mousey pony-tailed girl...but was never a follower. Even now it's hard for me to be a follower.

Uncle Ricko worries me- I think he's harmless, but still- when he gets beaten up by Rex- Yeahhh! I loved that :)

I dated a guy named Rex one time...and he was a body builder- it didn't work out. Can you imagine a big hulky guy taking directions from me??? See- thats why it didn't work! LOL

Friends- I'm just sharing a tiny bit of my life with you tonight. Not glamorous- not terribly exciting...pretty lonely actually now that the kids have gone to bed. I deleted my photos from the earlier post- they are me- but just don't send the kind of signal I'd like.

I am blonde- my eyes are saphire blue, I can be lovely in the right light, and I can be as ordinary as a weed in other light. My maiden name, Runkle, means "Weed"...

for stuborn-ness I think! (Definitely not the mellow-making kind!)

I wish just one of you were here this evening.

"End of the Spear" is the next movie I'll watch- and you know it will make me cry. I'll let you know how it goes...
