Laughter, Thought, and Passion~

This took thought~ (I made it :)

Roxanne posted a video (or 2 :) at her place that made me laugh out loud this morning...

Now---
for that other thing...
what was it?
Oh- yes- I remember.

Passion.

I exhaled as I wrote the word.

Did you know the word "passion" comes from the Latin word passiō - which means suffering, submission, deriv. of L passus, ptp. of patī to suffer, submit.

But now it is full of other meanings...about love, lust, and desire, feeling intensely about something or someone.

I take some comfort in the old meaning. If you've ever been "passionate" about anything- and it ended poorly (either a person or a project)- you understand where the suffering part makes perfect sense.
I suppose passion and determination are sisters?
As much as "regeret and loss" are brothers~

Here's to Passion without Regret, and to Determination without Loss- and to Thought and Laughter, which help us choose wisely, and ease the ache of our mistakes-
respectively- of course :)

A life without passion is no life at all.

I like the reminder of what passion used to mean. I think you do suffer for things you are truly passionate about, in a variety of ways.

Happy New Year, friend.

Have you ever been passionate about anything and not suffered over it?

Kev-
I agree...we can live without passion, but it's not much of a life.
xoxox

Bone-
♥ Thank you- and Happy New year to you too :)
Nothing shapes our character- for ill or good- like suffering...and it's remarkable when we're passionate about something- how we volunteer for the shaping...quite happily. I'm on the fence in a few areas of my life- knowing full well when I make a final decision that I will go foward with full steam- and I will be changed.
For now though- I'm going to sit still a little longer :)

Iamnot-
Wine...no- I did suffer...ummm- my Kids...no, wait- I have teens- hence lots of suffering...let's see- Marriage- ok- I'm going to skip that one...
Scrapbooking and knitting-
sigh-
But I'm not as passionate about those things because I don't have time with all the wine, kids, and marriage issues :)
LOL-
You are absolutely right. Passion of course is not solely about suffering- but your point is quite valid.
Ok- 2nd day of the year- and I've already told you- "You are right".
We are off to a brilliant start!
xoxoxo :)

A life without passion is like...um...dispassionate, I guess.

Just another way of saying pointless.

I have had passions of both definitions, and both are types that makes life worth living. Thanks for being passionate about writing, Cora. I have missed being here for most of 2007, and its so nice to be here again.

You know, I have not felt passion before and even though I've never had it, I know I'm missing it.

i am burning right now with passion for building my EMPIRE! i cant sleep! im excited with the possibility of what might and could be. your posts always are where i am..funny that way.

most people think of passion as for another person but me its more landscape, ways of being, visual delights....etc. with people its hard to sustain thats why married life ebbs and flows. in a nice turn of dovetailing with my state of mind, im in "flow" but there was a whole lotta "ebb" last year. but if you wait....it'll swing back around.

guess what? i got a treat in the mail. and i love it. :-)))!!!!! xoxoxox love 2 u sweet coe-ruh

passion
is suffering,
of course it is

as joy is more about loss than gain

gain more... money, houses, cars, sex, drugs, material junk = happy? no. lose your fear, your hatred, your 'control'... and be happy

the passion of christ, suffering this life until he could lose it, giving up the ghost/spirit, turning control over to god, and finding eternal life

you and she said it all so much better

/t.

No pain no gain ;)

Great sentiment, we must suffer a bit for all good things in life.

Great subject!

Don't know if it is a cultural difference or what ... but to me passion has always mean a state of being in that means that nothing else matter ... for this passion You will gladly give up anything else.

"But now it is full of other meanings...about love, lust, and desire, feeling intensely about something or someone."

To me there is no "buts"
Passion is like an umbrella where the "other meanings" are safely protected ;-) to me anyway.

But, I am just an other melancholic Swede due to our passionate inner (cold as ice on the outside) he he he

Thanks!

passion ~ to love to the point where pleasure becomes pain. its so much like a living entity ... something that just chooses you and grabs hold ... that will eat you alive if you try to deny it. oh yes, passion = suffering. it makes me think of the legend of the thorn bird.

Very good. From that verb, the Romans also derrived the word patiens, which means suffering. It's where we get the English word 'patient' (obviously a (sufferer). It's also where we get the word 'patient.'

We sometimes miss the connection between patience and passion, don't you think?

i agree. you can't have passion without submitting to the passion and suffering through the passion. living a passionate life is not easy.

I've been told more than once that I am a person of passion. And it isn't always a compliment. I prefer the word intense.

Happy New Year to ya!

Amy- it's always so good to see you- :)

Betty- dearheart...you have known suffering, hence you have known passion- but I hope this year you feel the tingly kind! :)

She- you are such a true friend and inspiration to me- thank you. Glad you love the hat :) I think Foamy needs one next :)

/t- you are quite the poet! Wow- talk about passion...no- I don't think anyone has said anything here with more clarity or brilliance than you have. Hugs- and as always- thanks for being here <3

This is really well written Cora and clearly touches a nerve with so many people.

I think passion is a double edged sword... when you have the good bits of it its fabulous, motivating, inspirational... but when you have the suffering part... the submitting bit... its gutting.

The thing is, its like an addictive drug. Once you have the passion you cant stand living without it. I wonder if passionless people are really unhappy? They probably have an easier life... less tears and of course less laughter...

I plan on calling you later to catch up and thank you! I just got the mail! =]

You are so thoughtful and passionate about life. I am thrilled to call you friend. xoxo

Anna- you said, "Passion is like an umbrella where the "other meanings" are safely protected" - good observation! I like the idea of "passion" being an unbrella and swirling under it are all the things that passion is comprised of. Thanks for your visit :)

Libby- hugs :)

Ruela- a MAN of Passion! I can tell ;) Happy new year to you too :)

Roxanne- I can hardly wait to read the stories you will write in the up coming year... Passion might = suffering at times, but it equals bliss too ;)

X-DELL-
WOW...talk about a PROFOUND connection! I mentioned your comment at the dinner table over the weekend- (almost as good as having you here- but not quite! :)
The kids and I had a good time discussing the suffering of "patience" (both the virtue, and people in need of medical care)- and how passion and patience stem from the same word in Latin. It was a wonderful converstaion- thank you...really
thank you :)

Boneman- lol! The hat was for a chick :) The men's hats don't have all the fluff ;) Glad you still like your scarf- hugs :)

NYD- I am sorry for "missing" you on the 25th- but you made my week :) Hugs- for you and for Scary...'cause you know I love that monster! :)

Susan- I can understand why they might say that about you- :) If I said it...I would mean it as a compliment- hugs- and I hope this new year is a good one for you- for both of us~

Phos...I'm with you- and rather determined I might add :)

Kate- Yeahhh! So good to see you :) Glad you are home safe- and that the mail arrived :) LOL- I hope you enjoy looking through it as much as I did...
I'll be easier to catch later in the week. Give my best to your family- especially A :)
Hugs for all of you! :)
