First day home- and I'm out of sorts.
As you know Cadence died just a few days before I went out of town. I missed the funeral and the gathering afterwards, so there's a part of me that still needs closure. In one way it's as if my trip to Charleston simply put my grief on hold...even though there were moments (like the day of the funeral) when deep saddness erupted in the midst of what was otherwise a joyful week.

All day I've wanted to blog but couldn't find the words. I kept stumbling, mentally, over a dark brooding feeling- and couldn't put my finger on what it was until just a little while ago.

I want to share my photos and funny stories about the family reunion, but there's a cloud over my heart. However, I'm going to press on~

One highlight of my trip to Charleston was getting to meet fellow blogger Greg and his family. He was gracious enough to invite us to his home and then show us around his greenhouse and then the Irvin Winery.
We had a great time and appreciated Greg and Diane being willing to meet us and show us around.

After the winery Tim and I and the kids went to the Charleston Tea Plantation, the "only" tea plantation in the US. We learned all about the tea plants- from how they're harvested to the final process of putting those little leaves in paper bags! There was a giant green (copper) frog on the front porch and I just couldn't resist giving him a little smooch!


He didn't turn into a Prince or anything...but I don't suppose he would have anyway- seeing how I'm not a Princess! :) And, Tim would have been peeved about having an extra dude hanging around. ;)

The purpose of the Charleston trip though was a family reunion, with 32 0f us splitting 2 houses, sharing meals, group cooking/shopping, talking, beaching, and lots of laughing.

I have never eaten so well in all my life! Everything was prepared by hand... We had Mexican food one night, Beef Brisket with black beans and rice, a low country boil (corn, sausages, and shrimp simmered in a big pot outside...MMMM!), an old fashioned cook out with hot dogs, hamburgers, dips, and all the fixings, breakfast casseroles, pork chop biscuits, shrimp grits, bacon, eggs...Oh! It was ALL GOOD!

I know some of you (Mantissa :) expressed concern about spending a whole week with extended family, and yes, there were moments when we had a few rough patches...folks not seeing eye to eye on certain things, but for the most part we all got along remarkably well. They are good people and I am honored to belong to them, and they to me.

Our last day at the beach was overcast, but the water was heavenly! There was almost no undertow and the waves were gentle swells which was a pleasure to swim and float and play in!

Apparently the JELLYFISH thought so too! One of them, with long tendrils, floated past my right leg and decided to hug me (or something!) Dear God in heaven...what pain!!! Suddenly it felt as if my leg were on fire- and I was doing all I could to get out of the water. The swelling and red marks were wrapped around from the side of my calf just above the ankle and up the front of my shin to just below the knee.

If you are ever stung by a jellyfish, this is what you should do-

*Rub a handful of sand on the site immediately. This makes it feel better for a few minutes (and I think it helps scrub out some of the poison and any barbs still in the skin. )

*Rinse off the site with clean fresh water and then soak the affected skin in VINEGAR for 20 to 30 minutes. I soaked a wash cloth with vinegar and sat in the tub.

*Then apply a paste of meat tenderizer, water, and baking soda to the skin and let it sit for another 10 to 15 minutes.

*Lastly, and I thought this would really hurt, but it didn't, apply shaving cream and SHAVE the area. The razor will pull out any remaining barbs and it scrapes the poison out of the skin.

I will never go to the beach again without Vinegar, Baking Soda, and Meat Tenderizer. As many times as I've been swimming in the ocean I've never had an encounter like this one...never been stung or bitten (except for tiny fish nibbles) by anything in the water until now. I was in serious pain for the better part of the evening although the treatment listed above lessened the pain by about 50%. My leg is still marked up from the encounter, but the pain was mostly gone by the following morning.

The next thing I'll post will be the interview by our beloved Scary Monster. I'll be by your place for a visit very soon- I've got loads of catching up to do!

Sunburned (but only a little), well fed (I gained 7 pounds- UGHHH!!!!), well loved, and stung by a beast of a Jelly Fish! But I'm here~

Moment of Silence~

We lost Cadence this morning.
I wanted to thank you for your prayers and support.
I do believe in heaven- and I believe all children go there when they die.

Cadence is there now- and as heartbroken as I am over her passing, I am thankful that she's not suffering anymore. She was a gift of love, and she still is.

For Scary Monster, and why I've been so busy-

Apparently Scary, or some version of him, has gotten lost up north in Canada~
I admit that I have him stomping around with me- or at least I have a COPY of him.
This is not the real deal- but the next best thing~

This is me, at my desk upstairs- with a crooked lamp shade in the corner (because I told someone I would keep it that way for the rest of the year in their honor)
And there is Scary- always smiling (or something) at me...
My beloved dog's photo (K9/She) is on the other wall, and all the things my blog friends have sent me (besides paintings that are hanging up downstairs) are in this room with me, or in one of my journals.
X-Dell wrote today about a blog friend of his who is suffering. I have a dear blog friend who has just been diagnosed with cancer. And yet another friend whose wife is not a blogger- and thinks we in the blog community are just looking for love~
LOL-
Well, yes, of course- we ARE all looking for love, or companionship, or new friends, or just the simple desire to be heard. I am trying to get around to the 20 or so blogger who read me and get caught up at their place- it's a slow process, but you know what?
I love it.
And I care about all of you. We are a community in one way or another- and there are some bonds here that I do think will last for a long time. You are each special and dear in your own ways- and I value you. Some of you have big places in my heart... Thank you friends :)

Remember a few weeks ago when my kids were denied transfer out of year round school?
And I was going to write an angry letter questioning "WHY"?
I didn't write it.
Everytime I got ready to- I had the strangest sense that "Absolute Tact" was in order here.
Last Wednesday I got a call- out of the blue, from the Office of Student Assingment...my son was chosen to go to a "School of the Arts" that we've been applying to for 2 years!
No year round program for him!
Next- I called to see where my daughter was on the waiting list at a Charter school we applied to last fall-
She is #1 on the wait list!!!

If she does not get in I'll homeschool her- seriously. This is how determined I am to keep her out of that particular Middle School.

I've been reading "Awakening at Midlife", "7 Levels of Intimacy", and working in a Latin workbook. I've been listening to a college lecture about the life and work of Mark Twain, and for the first time ever- I have a whole story line for a book in my head- from beginning to end.
I've been reading the Bio of Carl Jung- wow!
I've also been asked to preview a new book that will be coming out around Christmas for an author who is a good friend of a good friend. I've actually been published in one of her books already.
I'm also going to submit an application at a pre-school for a teaching position. My hearts first love is little kids- and this would be an ideal position for me. Part time, pre-schoolers, lots of playing and making stuff-
It's perfect...and I was recommended to the director. We'll see what happens.

So, this is what's consumed me, and will continue to until the fall. If I homeschool Juli-Anna- I'll be really busy, but in the best kind of way :)

I have another trip in my future- to Charleston SC, and hopefully one to Florida later this fall with my daughter for her birthday (or close to it). She wants to go to Disney when it isn't so blooming hot- and less crowded. I'm working on it!

Hopefully I'll be around to see you soon. Now you are all caught up on my little life. And by the way, the new Tin foil hats are working out nicely! LOL! ;)

The Sunsets around here are beautiful...

We were on our way home from a wedding celebration/reception- and I insisted that "Mr. Mayden" pull over so I could take a few pictures.

The colors changed so quickly- and one set was as vibrant as the next.

I couldn't believe how gorgeous it was. How firey the oranges were- how deep the blue-

And the Pink/ Peachy clouds...

I love the sky.
That sounds silly- but it's true. And I love the trees in North Carolina, and the green green grass. I love the hills, and the lakes, and my back yard.



I'm a romantic at heart...




My husband and I will celebrate our 18th wedding anniversary next week.
We'll be in Charleston at a beach front family re-union. Might not be very romantic, but it should be a lot of fun.
Which I think sums up my marriage pretty well.
We are friends- above and beyond everything else.
Yes- there are days when I wish for "more of" one thing or another...and there are lots of times when feelings get hurt, or needs go unmet because of the pace of a busy life- but at the end of each day...I climb into bed with a dear friend I've known since I was 12- and I realize more and more each day that it's a gift.
A real gift.



Sorry to be all mushy in this post! I've been stunningly busy- reading, writing, making plans for the fall, I might even end up with a job in September! I promise to catch up soon- and comment.
I've missed you- All of you :)

Me, on RUSH...months ago~

Before (or IF) you listen to this...
there are 2 things I want to tell you-

1. Mark, a relatively new friend at Myspace- but someone I went to high school with sent this video/audio clip to me...THANK YOU! :) I didn't get to hear this clip until he sent it to me- and I'm going to video tape it so I don't lose it!

2. The topic of conversation with Rush is about Mike Nifong and the 3 young men who were charged with raping an exotic dancer. The day the men were declared innocent I called Mr. Limbaugh and got through in the very last segment.

Rush had said 6 months earlier that the "truth would come out slowly" (he compared it to the Clinton/Lewisky affair) and all the charges would be dropped in the Spring. He was absolutely correct about this.

I believe Mr. Nifong was right and honorable to take the charges the woman made seriously. He was wrong and corrupted when he withheld information that showed there was NO evidence to convict the students with a crime.

I also believe Mr. Nifong continued to press on with the case because it won him favor with several black powerful Political Action Committees. Without their support he didn't think he could win the upcoming election for the position of District Attorney.

This is not meant to shine a bad light on the PAC's. Certainly- if a black woman is raped by 3 white men and the DA turns a blind eye to the situation...this is a reason for outrage. (It would be reason for outrage no matter what color a person was!) But, to use a case like this to earn points with one demographic in order to garner their support, at the brutal expense of 3 innocent men- well, it was just maddeningly wrong.

So...Here it is- my 15 seconds of fame (for this year anyway :) on Mr. Limbaugh's radio program.

July 4th

He came to the beach military style...long pants, dog tags, and a cool watch.
He probably looked at all the sand and thought, "I've seen all the sand I ever want to see for as long as I live."


But this soldier wasn't alone...

I watched him with his kids- he carried his baby everywhere. His 3 and 4 year olds were always close by, within arms reach- I wondered how many months/years they had learned to live without dad being within "arms reach"- while he kept the rest of us out of "harms way".

I admire these men, and I admire their families. I whispered a prayer of thankfulness that this soldier was home with his for the 4th of July...for a trip to the beach with his kids.



Somehow- I don't think he minded all the sand today.

What's on going~

School-
My kids were denied a second time...they will be going to year round school again this year- with no explanation as to why...just kind of "I said so". July 16th is their first day back.

A spikey(?)and unsatisfied letter from me to the Board of Education, the District Atty's office, and the Atty. Generals office (I don't know why that last one would care- but it sounds good!- hell- I might even send a copy to the Governor!)- is in the works. I'll probably go down on my face over this, but I'm not going quietly!

I haven't written a decent thing for any of the stories I've started, and I admit I've been pretty distracted with "life" happening around me. I have been writing pretty faithfully in my journal. And I have completed the campaign stuff for Cadence.


My birthday in May marked my 30th anniversary of keeping a diary/journal. It's fun to go back and read what I was doing 20 years ago...

"...I didn't exactly get the guy- he was awfully shy. Lord, so much has happened. There's nothing much between Dave and I. I like a guy named Donny at the club, but I doubt it will work. A man named Carter likes me...I think." (I have no idea who the shy guy was, and Dave was in the Army. Donnie did not work out at all. Carter was a mistake- he was- 40...ick)

The last boyfriend I would have (before T) showed up the next day- and we had a lovely summer whirl-wind romance. LOL- I haven' t thought about him in a while. He was wonderful- and if he hadn't gone to North Dakota to go to school in the fall...well, never mind, he did go to ND- and T came back into my life. That is that.

I'm going to step away for a while- except I am going to make a video for Chesca (Kiss on my list, by Hall and Oates) :)

I owe X, and Susan, K-9, Roxann, and Chesca an email. I want to send out cards to some of you too...but with the kids out of school it seems like I run out of daylight and energy long before I should. Mono is running it's course through my neck of the woods- hope I don't have that! (surely not~)

Cadence is still in the hospital- and when I have an update about her- I'll post it- I promise.

Mid-July is when school is back in session- and I'll be sketchy with the blog until then. I will be reading up on you though! I also hope to get some writing of my own done...just not on Mayden's Voyage~

Serene moments-

The beach photos in the last post were taken within a few minutes of each other-
the view in front of us was lovely- but a storm was brewing behind us.
It wan't Hell at all- I was being overly dramatic~

On the other hand- I had just gotten some bad news about Cadence when I posted the photos, and she is very, very ill now. My heart is heavy over her and her family.

For all the suffering this little one has gone through, I have seen some wonderful things happen because of her. I've seen people of all races and colors come together to support a baby they don't know. It's been a remarkable thing to witness.

I've seen people open their hearts, and their wallets...and learn a thing or 2 about the importance of Organ Donation. (If you aren't a donor- would you please consider it?)

Cadence is bleeding, the PICC line wouldn't go in...she's in the hospital again. I don't feel 100% comfortable giving all the private details about her recent admission, but I think it's sufficient for me to tell you that I'm terribly concerned about her.

And above it all- I see how splendidly blessed I am. Healthy kids, a husband who loves me (he does his best- I'm not easy to live with!). My sisters kids are wonderful and well- and love me too. The contrast between my life, and the life of the mother of Cadence is startling.
In some ways- my heart aches all the more for her because of the life I have.

I am most assuredly blessed. And even with the curse of this terrible illness- Cadence is blessed too- to be surrounded by so many who love her. Some kids grow up with perfect health, but are never loved at all.

If you pray- if you know how to send good thoughts- if you meditate in anyway today- whisper a word of Peace and Comfort for Cadence, and especially for her mom and grandparents.

Look around at your life and recognize the good in it. Even if a storm is brewing in the distance...even if you are in the middle of one at the moment- find something good to focus on and be thankful for it.

I am sad today- and yet a nearly tangible peace is draped over me.
Feels like Serenity...not a calm before the storm, but a calm as I watch the storm gather over us and the people I care about.

I watched the sun set...and then took a few pics of my favorite places at home.

This was a special spot in the front yard created for me on Mothers Day a few years ago~


This is the view from the bench- so I can look at all the Lillies I've planted...my favorite flowers-I need to weed and pull those monsterous shrubs out!






Bone posted something that got me thinking. However, if you read him...no surprise there :)
10 years can bring a lot of changes. 10 years ago my kids were almost 2 and 4. My life was stunningly different in many ways, and yet similar in some aspects.

At least one of the Lillies pictured above was growing in my yard. I dug up the bulbs when we moved. I will move these plants with me where ever I go- if they will tollerate the conditions.

This fall I have to dig up the bulbs and re-plant them to keep them from being so compacted- if any of you want some, I'll mail a few to you. There are hundreds of bulbs now- more than enough to share :)

I leave today to be with my kids at their grandmothers house- and I'm taking my laptop with me...nothing like sitting in bed and catching up with all of you when the kids are asleep.

I feel bad...

The one thing I really want to do is spend several hours reading up on all of you and commenting-
and I can't.

Too much stuff going on with the kids finishing up the school year, problems with the school board not honoring my request to transfer out of year round school.
Hubs in the doledrums. (Even though I'm home? What's up with that?)
Me recovering and catching up on what I missed for the last week.
Getting the kids ready to head to Grannies this weekend...

BLAH!

Today I passed a car that said,
"Zero tollerance for Republicans"

But he was in the Navy, so a Fuc% You didn't seem appropriate.

But really...

No tollerance for those who have a different system of values is not a democracy.

It's so great to be an American. It really is. That Asshat can say anything he wants.

My car says, "God loves you" and "Pray for the troops"-

I didn't flip him off- or blow my horn... I was reminded how foolish people can be- and that I don't have to be one of those people.

I said the Pledge of Allegience today at my daughters graduation ceremony- damn if I didn't get tears in my eyes...
I ALWAYS DO. Even if I say it alone at home.

I'm such a girl.

And such an American.

I hope to catch up with all of you soon. I really do. I miss you.

The rain comes...

The drought is over...perhaps not completely for Florida-
but I think it is for me.

The people I've met, both intentionally and by chance, have "watered" me, and made impressions that will last a long time.

Gwapo- I couldn't help but think of you as I walked through the church... I felt connected to you in a way that's hard to explain- but however it's possible- it felt like you were there with me in spirit...
I'm serious.

K9 lives and breathes with a sense of control and awareness that is almost tangible. She is one of those rare people who are AWAKE as they move through life.
Meeting and being with her for several days was a gift...a LIFE gift...a gift of energy. I left her wanting to be a better person...

Kate was a gracious and lovely hostess- I loved being in her home every minute we were there. Her family is beautiful. She is a treasured friend. A real desire of my heart is to see her kids, and mine become friends.


I saw this and all I could think of was Pete! I took this photo for him...he was on my mind as I walked through St. Augustines-


It's a real hope of mine that I will get to spend a few days with Aunty Belle before the year is over.- She is a jewel of a lady...with more wisdom in her little finger than I have in my whole person. Her posts are insightful and deep. I felt sad when she left- there was SO much I wanted to talk about with her!


I'm home again- and the drought of kisses and hugs from the kids have been sweet- and hubs was quite happy to see me again too- which is a good thing.
I don't know exactly how my adventure to Florida has changed me- but I know it has. I feel more centered- and unwilling to get caught up in what other people think, or say, or feel- if it doesn't further who I am- or what I want to be.

I can not express to all of you how much this trip meant to me- but I promise you one thing...if ANY of you come close to where I am- I will do whatever I can to meet you. It can be a life changing thing- a bit of spice in a plain old pasta dish...
Trust me-
You DON'T want to miss it!

So much to say...but not yet-

This is a teaser post- but I have some time carved out this evening to write.
I'm headed to St. Augustine to have a look around- and hope to come back with some good pic's of the city.

Wish I did have a tan like this! Seven would appreciate the topless beach imagery here :)
But- I assure you- I was mostly covered while on the beach!

"Above the fray and beyond the pale" (thanks Pete for saying that!)

Kate and I had the MOST fun together!
We ate great food (her grilled lamb and steamed green beans were YUM YUM YUM!) We drank good wine (even made our own combination!), took a long walk in a beautiful place, saw an aligator (or 3!), got a manicure, and had my eyebrows waxed (I should have done a before and after photo-LOL)- and after all that...it was time to get ready for the "BLOG SUMMIT

I was as nervous and excited as I'd ever been. I was sweating like I had run a race, my mind was- in fact- racing, my stomach was all twitchy... WHY?




I was about to meet my beloved K9!!! :)





Now, to be fair, I had spoken to her on the phone several times, seen her picture, and we could probably fill a book with all the correspondence between us...but still- I hadn't met her face to face. I know it sounds silly...to get that worked up, but of all the bloggers I've met- this one already occupied a place in my heart, and meeting her was very important to me.

So- it was time to go...Kate and her dear husband helped me load up the car, and off we went to Julie's Waterfront.

We arrived a few minutes early- but not before everyone else. I saw K9 when I pulled into the parking lot and I couldn't manage to park my car correctly before I jumped out to hug her!
(I didn't realize my car wasn't pulled all the way into the parking space until it was time to leave :0 )


The evening was full of conversation and laughter. It was everything a Blog Summit should be- good people having a good time, and parting as better friends when the evening was over.



When it was time to part ways I was sorry to see the evening come to an end, but I was thrilled to follow K9 home and begin the next leg of this Florida adventure, which I'll post more about at the end of the week (if I can wait that long!)

Thank you all for your thoughts and notes...I'll get over to your pages soon.

I am having so much fun! I will be spoiled rotten by the time I get home-
Actually- with friends like all of you- I'm already spoiled!

Memorial Day, 1969

I was born on May 30th, 1969... Memorial Day.

Growing up- I always knew that my B-day was a holiday...and I knew it had nothing to do with me. In 1971 Congress passed a law that Memorial Day would become the last Monday in May- rather than May 30th, the original day that we honored our soldiers who had died.

But the day I was born- May 30th, was a friday...and it was Memorial day. My dad was shipped out to sea for 6 months, 12 days after I was born.

My Great Uncle Hubert Crill was on a ship in Pearl Harbor when it was attacked.
He related the events of that day to me 12 years ago. I wish I had video of his account of what happened. He was scared to death, and fought, and lived to tell me the story.

My Grandfather fought in WWII
My Uncles fought in Vietnam.
My dad was on a sub for 4 years.


Take a moment today to remember our soldiers...both those who have passed, and those who walk among us. They are the real treasures of America... a reason to celebrate :)

I had lunch with a blog friend today- a special man who we know as "Greg the Gardener" http://gregsgeneralstore.blogspot.com/-

I guess I've been reading him for a few months now- his blogs are personal, and sensitive, quiet, and peaceful. I enjoy reading his posts, but the real joy came in meeting him.

If you ever travel south down I-95...let him know. You will meet a prince of a man in everyday clothes- he is kindhearted, a good listener, and someone you will enjoy the presence of. Thank you Greg- our meeting was the highlight of my day today :)

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SOCCER DAD AND A SOCCER MOM:

Tonight I am in Jacksonville Florida- and there must be 50 kids here because of Soccer tournaments. These are some of the best behaved and polite kids I have ever met. Their dads are diligent, focused, and present. It's a pretty awesome thing to see-

But...

While I was in the hot tub tonight- a dad came out with his son to the pool. The kid only had about 10 minutes to swim- and the whole time the boy was in the pool- his dad was asking questions like, "Son, what are 3 things you think you could do to improve your game tomorrow?"
Or, "Think about your game today son...where did you fail...where could you improve?"
And, "Son...how are you going to play tomorrow?"
Son: "I'm going to play better!"
Dad: "How are you going to play better?"
Son: "I'm going to focus!"

and so on...and so on...

Finally- it was time for the boy to go. He kicked his ball, and it splashed into the hot tub where I was (and dad said, "Son, don't kick the ball in the pool area!")

The boy, who was no more than 12 or 13, walked over to where I was to get his ball.
And I said to him,
"Son, I hope you have FUN tomorrow"
He stoppped, paused, and looked at me, and said,

"Thank you, Ma'm".

Heavens...I hope he does have fun tomorrow! His dad was a good dad...and to be sure- I am a good mom, regardless of whether a kid is mine, or not.
